Beat Magazine is one of the two major street press magazines in Melbourne, distributed for free on a weekly basis with a companion website. The organisation also published three other magazines and an annual Comedy Festival magazine.
I was responsible for editing the Arts section, sub-editing the music section, running the website and producing the entire Comedy Section special edition.
  • I worked closely with the in-house software engineer to design the new look and feel and site structure for the website, built in Drupal.
  • I developed a total IA and content strategy audit and restructure, allowing the complex content structure of the magazine sections and types to be represented within the CMS.
  • I worked closely with the advertising team to help build a strategy to drive revenue and commissioned columnists and new sections.
  • I worked with the engineer and editorial team to streamlining content uploading by turning the workflow around and developing a publishing system that started with uploading articles to the website and then building functionality that allowed that content to be exported as InDesign XML to be typeset for the print magazine.
  • I sourced and trained interns, wrote news content and worked on building an SEO strategy for the site.
